Pure Mate from Brazil
At the beginning of the 16th Century, the Spanish discovered a beverage drunk by the Guarani Indians in Paraguay which “relieved fatigue”. The Jesuits instituted the cultivation of this tree, which can grow up to 20 metres high, and was therefore dubbed Jesuits’ tea. The Ilex paraguariensis was cultivated and drunk mostly in Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, however today it is grown in numerous tropical countries to respond to a worldwide growing demand.
